|
Shockwaves rippled through social and mainstream media on the 2nd of February 2012, in the wake of the Susan G. Komen Foundation's decision to cease funding of Planned Parenthood. Komen CEO Nancy Brinker was called on the carpet to explain the Foundation's actions. Partisan supporters lined up on both sides. Those in favor of SGK argued that monies should not be going to an organization that supports and in some cases provides abortions. Planned Parenthood supporters were appalled because the organization is engaged in the far greater activity of providing reproductive health care to women.
And it seemed there was no middle ground. Then everything changed the morning of the 3rd when SGK announced it was reversing its decision. But will a kiss-and-make-up reaction salvage what may have been a tarnished reputation? And what about the folks who originally supported SGK's decision? Would they now be against Komen? And let us not forget donations, of which both organizations so heavily depend. Yes, Komen noted it had witnessed a 100% increase in donations after the first decision, while Planned Parenthood reported a $900,000 bump. It remains to be seen what the long-term effect of this will be. In the mean time, we'd like to know what you think about it all. Click here to launch the survey. |
